Motion blocks: move and turn
A motion block that moves a sprite forward 10 steps in the direction it faces. Other motion blocks, like turn 15 degrees and go to x y, change which way it faces or where it is.
Understanding Motion blocks: move and turn in Years 5–6 Creating Digital Solutions
What it does: The go to x y block places the sprite at the position given by the x and y numbers, here the centre of the stage. A turn block with 90 degrees rotates the sprite a quarter of a full circle, so it now faces a new direction. Move goes in the direction the sprite is facing. It does not spin the sprite. Turning changes the way the sprite faces. The sprite stays in the same place. A bigger number in the move block means a longer move. A bigger number in the turn block means a bigger turn. Mixing up units shows the mix-up between changing position (steps) and changing direction (degrees).
Common mistakes: A turn block is measured in degrees, not steps. Steps are for the move block. It should say 'turn right 90 degrees'. The move block counts steps, not degrees. Degrees are for turning. It should be 'move 100 steps' so the sprite draws the side of a square.
