Date/time data
A data type that stores a calendar date and/or time of day, such as 25/03/2025 or 14:30, so values can be sorted in order and used to calculate the duration between two dates.
Understanding Date/time data in VCE Data Analysis
What it does: A time stamp combines a date and a time of day in one value, here 25 March 2025 at 2:30 pm. Sorting on a date/time field in ascending order puts the earliest dates first, which only works reliably when the data is stored as date/time. DD/MM/YYYY puts the day first, then the month, then the four-digit year, with a slash between each part. Subtracting an earlier date from a later date gives a duration, such as the number of days between 01/03/2025 and 15/03/2025 (14 days). Adding two dates has no meaning.
Common mistakes: A due date holds a calendar date, so it needs the Date/Time data type. Boolean only stores true or false. The line should be 'Data type: Date/Time'. A time of day uses an hours and minutes format like HH:MM. DD/MM/YYYY is a calendar date format and does not match the example 14:30.
