Virtual private networks (VPNs)
A virtual private network creates an encrypted tunnel across a public network so a remote user can access a private network securely.
Understanding Virtual private networks (VPNs) in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: This describes a common real-world use of a VPN for remote staff. This describes exactly what encryption in transit achieves for a VPN user. Encryption is the core mechanism that makes a VPN secure. That's the main purpose of a VPN - secure remote access. The tunnel crosses public infrastructure like the internet. Public Wi-Fi is less secure, so a VPN adds valuable protection there. A VPN encrypts data so it stays protected while in transit. VPNs are commonly used to let staff securely connect from anywhere.
Common mistakes: A VPN does encrypt data - that's the core of how it protects traffic. Encryption is essential to a VPN - without it, the tunnel isn't secure.
