Local Area Networks (LANs)
A network that connects devices within a single limited location, such as a school, home or office building.
Understanding Local Area Networks (LANs) in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: This describes what devices on a LAN can do with shared resources. This distinction separates a LAN's scale from a WAN's much larger scale. A LAN typically covers a small, defined space like a building. The organisation that runs the location usually owns its LAN. Sharing local resources is one of the main benefits of a LAN. A LAN covers a small area, not multiple countries. A home network connecting local devices is a common example of a LAN. A LAN's range is limited to a small area, unlike a WAN.
Common mistakes: A LAN covers a small area, not many countries - that describes a WAN. Devices on a LAN can share resources like files and printers.
