Switches
A device that connects multiple devices within one network and forwards data only to the device it is intended for.
Understanding Switches in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: This describes exactly how a switch forwards data on a network. This distinction separates the role of a switch from the role of a router. A switch links devices together so they can communicate within a network. A switch reads addresses and sends data only to the intended recipient. Connecting separate networks is a router's job, not a switch's job. This is the core definition of what a switch does. A port is where a device physically connects to a switch. Sending to every device describes a hub, not the targeted forwarding of a switch.
Common mistakes: Storing web pages is a server's job, not a switch's job. A switch is an active device, not just a passive cable.
