Firewalls
A device or program that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic according to defined security rules.
Understanding Firewalls in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: This describes what an allow rule does in a firewall. A firewall watches traffic entering and leaving the network. Firewalls apply rules to allow or block specific traffic. A firewall filters traffic selectively, not blocks it all. This selective filtering is the core purpose of a firewall. Firewalls can be hardware appliances as well as software. A firewall controls both incoming and outgoing traffic. Security rules are what a firewall applies to filter traffic.
Common mistakes: Firewalls don't block everything - they filter traffic based on rules. A firewall doesn't block all internet use - it filters based on rules.
