UX characteristic: interoperability

The ability of software to work with other systems, devices and file formats and exchange data with them, for example by using standard formats like CSV or PDF across platforms.

Understanding UX characteristic: interoperability in VCE Software Development U3O2

What it does: PDF is a standard format that displays the same on any platform, so saving to it supports cross-platform interoperability. Importing a CSV file lets the software take in data created by another program, which is exchanging data with other software. CSV is a standard, widely supported format, so many different programs can read it. Standard formats like PDF can be opened on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Working across different platforms and devices is a feature of interoperability. Good interoperability saves users effort when they use several tools or devices together. A proprietary format locks the data inside one application, which reduces interoperability.

Common mistakes: A custom format like .mydb can only be read by this one app, so it breaks interoperability. It should use a standard format such as 'grades.csv' that other software can open. Other contact apps cannot read a private format. The contacts should be exported to a standard format such as vCard so they can be exchanged with other software.

Which best describes interoperability?
Software that can exchange data with other systems, devices and file formatsSoftware that runs faster on a single device

Quick Questions

1. Which best describes interoperability?
A. Software that runs faster on a single device
B. Software that can exchange data with other systems, devices and file formats ✓
Interoperability is about working and exchanging data with other systems, not about speed.
2. A student exports their marks as a CSV file so another program can open it. What is this an example of?
A. Interoperability using a standard file format ✓
B. Interoperability using a proprietary format only one app can read
CSV is a standard, widely supported format, so many different programs can read it.
3. Which choice improves interoperability?
A. Saving reports in a custom format only your app can open
B. Saving reports as PDF so they open on any platform ✓
Standard formats like PDF can be opened on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
4. An app works on Windows, macOS and a phone. Which UX characteristic does this support?
A. Interoperability by working across platforms ✓
B. Affordance by showing a button looks clickable
Working across different platforms and devices is a feature of interoperability.
5. True or false: An app that cannot import files from other software has high interoperability.
A. False ✓
B. True
If an app cannot import or exchange data with other software, its interoperability is low.

Match the Pairs

report.export("csv") → Saves data in a standard file format that spreadsheets and other software can open and use
GET /api/orders -> JSON → Exchanges data with other software by sending it in a common format that different systems can read
Working across platforms: the same saved file can be opened on Windows, macOS and mobile devices → save(report, "PDF")
Exchanging data with other software by importing a standard file format → import_data("students.csv")
save(report, "report.myapp") → Saving in a custom file format that only this software can open means other programs cannot read the data, so interoperability is poor. Use a standard format such as CSV or PDF.
if device == "Windows": run() else: error() → The software only runs on one platform and refuses to work on others. It should support multiple platforms such as Windows, macOS and mobile.

Key Term

interoperability
The ability of software to work with other systems, devices and file formats and exchange data with them, for example by using standard formats like CSV or PDF across platforms.

Fill in the Blanks

1. import csv
Hint: Type the name of the Python module for reading and writing the comma-separated values format that spreadsheets and databases share.
2. import json text = json.dumps(record)
Hint: Type the module name for a lightweight standard text format that web services use to exchange data between systems.
3. EXPORT report AS PDF SHARE report WITH allUsers
Hint: Type the file format that looks the same on any device or operating system.
4. IF fileFormat = "CSV" THEN IMPORT data END IF
Hint: Type the keyword that starts a decision, checking a file is in a format this software can read.
5. with open("data.csv", "w") as f: writer = csv.writer(f) writer.writerow(row)
Hint: Type the csv function that creates an object for writing rows into a file other software can open.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A BEGIN exportGrades
B data ← readGrades()
C SAVE data AS 'grades.mydb'
D END exportGrades
Line C — A custom format like .mydb can only be read by this one app, so it breaks interoperability. It should use a standard format such as 'grades.csv' that other software can open.
Question 2
A // Share a contact list
B contacts ← loadContacts()
C EXPORT contacts TO MyAppFmt
D DISPLAY 'Exported'
Line C — Other contact apps cannot read a private format. The contacts should be exported to a standard format such as vCard so they can be exchanged with other software.
Question 3
A data ← PARSE CSV(response)
B temp ← data.temperature
C DISPLAY temp
Line A — The weather service sends its response as JSON, so it must be parsed as JSON. Reading it as CSV means the data is misread and cannot be exchanged correctly.
Question 4
A BEGIN importNames
B text ← READ file AS MyCodec
C DISPLAY text
D END importNames
Line B — A non-standard encoding can garble characters when files move between platforms. The file should be read using the standard encoding UTF-8.
Question 5
A rows ← EXPORT 'sales.csv'
B FOR EACH row IN rows
C DISPLAY row.total
D END FOR
Line A — The program needs to bring data from another system into this one, so it must IMPORT the CSV file. EXPORT sends data out instead.
