Understanding Purpose of a software development brief in VCE Software Development U3O2
What it does: The brief comes first in the sequence, so it is the starting point for the project. The brief states the problem and shows both the client and the developer agree on it. A brief is a short document that records what the project is about. It does not contain the code or the detailed design. A written record helps avoid misunderstandings. The client and developer can check it whenever they are unsure what was agreed. The brief must be a written document so both parties have a shared record of the agreement.
Common mistakes: A brief does not contain the final code. Its purpose is to record the problem, need or opportunity so the client and developer agree on the project. Line 1 should read 'Purpose: client and dev agree'. A brief is written before the solution is built, so it cannot record finished source code. It records the problem, need or opportunity.
