Understanding Project reason: meeting organisational objectives or needs in VCE Software Development U3O2

What it does: Compliance is an organisational need, so a project that adds consent tracking to meet a law is justified by a legal or regulatory requirement. Launching a new service is an organisational objective, so software built to support it is a project with a clear organisational reason. Software supports the organisation's goals. It does not replace them. Strategic goals are broad, stated aims such as growth or expansion. A poster font change is a minor task, not a strategic goal.

Common mistakes: A project is undertaken to help meet an organisational objective. Fixing a printer does not help the goal of growing online sales. It should be something like project ← "Build web shop". The goal is to meet a new law, so the reason for the project is compliance (a legal or regulatory need), not growth. It should be reason ← "Compliance".

Quick Questions

1. Which is a software project reason that meets an organisational objective?
A. A retailer builds an online store to reach its goal of 20% sales growth ✓

2. A school must meet a new law about storing student records. Why would it start a software project?
A. To fill a gap in the market
B. To meet a legal or regulatory need (compliance) ✓
Compliance with laws or regulations is a legal or regulatory need. It is an organisational need, not a market gap.
3. Which statement about organisational objectives is correct?
A. A software project is undertaken to help the organisation achieve a stated goal ✓
B. A software project is undertaken to replace the organisation's goals
Software supports the organisation's goals. It does not replace them.

Strategic goals are broad, stated aims such as growth or expansion. A poster font change is a minor task, not a strategic goal.

Match the Pairs

organisational objective → A stated goal an organisation wants to achieve, such as growth, compliance or a new service, which a software project helps meet.
Strategic goal → A long-term aim in an organisation's plan, such as growing customer numbers, that a software project is started to support.
A project is undertaken to meet a legal or regulatory need, such as complying with a law. → Reason: comply with new privacy law by adding consent tracking
A project is undertaken to support a new service the organisation wants to offer. → Reason: launch online booking app for new tutoring service
Reason: the developer thinks the app looks cool → A developer's personal interest is not an organisational objective. A project reason must link to a stated organisation goal or need.
Objective: compliance is optional, so ignore the new law → Legal or regulatory needs are not optional. Compliance can be an organisational need that justifies a software project.

Fill in the Blanks

1. objective ← "Grow online sales by 20%" project ← "Build an online store" approved ← project SUPPORTS objective
Hint: Type the variable that holds the organisation's stated goal, which the project must support.
2. type ← "legal" IF type = "legal" THEN reason ← "compliance"
Hint: Type the keyword that starts a decision, so a legal need leads to a compliance reason.
3. objective ← "Launch an online booking service" project ← "Booking app for clients" DISPLAY project, "supports", objective
Hint: Type the pseudocode keyword that shows output to the user.
4. reason ← "growth" IF reason = "growth" THEN objective ← "Increase market share"

Spot the Error

Question 1
A goal ← "Grow online sales"
B project ← "Fix office printer"
C reason ← "Strategic goal"
D DISPLAY goal, project
Line B — A project is undertaken to help meet an organisational objective. Fixing a printer does not help the goal of growing online sales. It should be something like project ← "Build web shop".
Question 2
A goal ← "Meet new privacy law"
B reason ← "Growth"
C project ← "Add consent form"
D DISPLAY reason
Line B — The goal is to meet a new law, so the reason for the project is compliance (a legal or regulatory need), not growth. It should be reason ← "Compliance".
Question 3
A service ← "Online booking"
B goal ← "Launch new service"
C project ← "Build booking app"
D IF project supports goal
E DISPLAY "Approved"
F END IF
Line D — An IF statement needs the keyword THEN at the end of the condition line. It should be IF project supports goal THEN.
Question 4
A goal ← "Meet audit rules"
B project ← "Add audit log"
C supports ← TRUE
D IF supports ← TRUE THEN
E DISPLAY "Go ahead"
F END IF
Line D — A condition must compare values using =, not assign a value using ←. It should be IF supports = TRUE THEN.
Question 5
A goals ← ["Growth", "Law"]
B FOR EACH goal IN goals
C DISPLAY "Help: " goal
D END FOR
Line C — The text and the variable must be joined with the + operator when displaying them together. It should be DISPLAY "Help: " + goal.
