Feedback and error messages in an interface

A response from the interface that tells the user what happened, like a confirmation message, or an error message that says what went wrong and how to fix it.

Understanding Feedback and error messages in an interface in VCE Software Development U3O2

What it does: This confirmation message tells the user exactly what happened, so they know the save worked. A helpful error says what went wrong and how to fix it. 'Error 4002' does neither. Feedback lets users know their action was received, like a message, a sound or a changed button. Confirmation messages show an action worked, so users don't have to guess or repeat it. Confirmation messages are there to give useful information, not to decorate the screen. 'Oops! Invalid.' does not say what is invalid or what to do. The other message explains the problem and the fix. A number alone means little to most users. Helpful errors use plain words to explain the problem and give a next step.

Common mistakes: The confirmation message must match what happened. The document saved, so it should say something like "Saved successfully", not that a delete failed. The error message should only appear when the password box is empty. The condition should be "if password is empty".

Line A — The error message should only appear when the password box is empty. The condition should be "if password is empty".
