Data flow diagram (Level 1): processes
A numbered, named step (e.g. 1.0 Validate Order) in a Level 1 DFD. It uses a verb phrase and shows one main task from the context diagram's single system.
Understanding Data flow diagram (Level 1): processes in VCE Software Development U3O2
What it does: The one system bubble in the context diagram is broken down into several numbered processes that together do the system's work. 'Generate' is the verb and 'Report' is the noun, so the name clearly states what the process does. Each Level 1 process has its own number, usually 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and so on, so it can be referred to easily. A database would be a data store, not a process. Processes use verb phrases to show an action. A process needs a number and a verb phrase, such as 2.0 Process Payment.
Common mistakes: Level 1 process names use a verb phrase (verb + noun). 'Order Validation' is a noun phrase. It should be '1.0 Validate Order'. Every Level 1 process must be numbered. This process has no number. It should be '1.0 Check Login Details'.
