Wide Area Networks (WANs)
A network that connects devices or LANs separated across large geographic distances.
Understanding Wide Area Networks (WANs) in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: This describes the role carriers play in supporting a WAN. This describes what a WAN connection achieves for an organisation. A WAN's defining feature is spanning large geographic distances. Organisations usually pay carriers to provide long-distance WAN links. The internet is described as the largest WAN in existence. A WAN spans a much wider area than a LAN, not a smaller one. Linking distant branch offices is a common use case for a WAN. A WAN covers far more than a single building - that describes a LAN.
Common mistakes: A WAN spans large distances, not just one building - that describes a LAN. WANs rely on paid third-party carriers, not unlimited free links.
