Intrusion detection systems (IDS)
A system that monitors network traffic for suspicious activity and raises an alert when it finds it.
Understanding Intrusion detection systems (IDS) in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: This describes exactly what anomaly-based detection does. An IDS reports threats but doesn't take action to stop them itself. Monitoring traffic for suspicious activity is the core role of an IDS. An IDS only alerts - it does not block traffic on its own. Signature-based detection matches traffic against known attack patterns. Raising an alert is how an IDS reports what it has found. An IDS detects and alerts - blocking traffic is a different system's job. This is the core definition of an intrusion detection system.
Common mistakes: An IDS does not block traffic - it only monitors and alerts. Blocking traffic is not an IDS's job - it only alerts.
