Visual communication element: form
The appearance of a three-dimensional object, or the illusion of depth on a flat screen, created using shading and perspective.
Understanding Visual communication element: form in QCE Digital Solutions Unit 2
What it does: A shadow is a 3D effect that gives a flat button the appearance of depth, which is form. Form makes a flat design look three-dimensional. An outline on its own is a line or shape, not form. Perspective makes things look smaller as they get further away, which creates the illusion of depth. Alignment is about lining up elements. Form should support communication. Heavy 3D effects can distort the data and make charts harder to read.
Common mistakes: A CSS property is separated from its value with a colon, not an equals sign. The shadow that gives the box its 3D, raised look should be written box-shadow: 4px 4px #666;. A CSS rule block opens with a curly brace {, not a round bracket. The perspective property inside it creates the illusion of depth, but only if the rule is written correctly.
