Compression - losing quality or saving space?
Reducing file size by removing or simplifying data, sometimes losing quality.
Understanding Compression - losing quality or saving space? in Issues in Technology
What it does: Lossless compression shrinks files without losing any data. Saving storage space is one main reason we compress files. Compression reduces how much space a file takes up. Lossy compression removes some data, which can lower quality. Compressing too aggressively can make quality noticeably worse. Smaller files take less time to load or send. Compression is used for music, video, documents and more. Compression is a key way to save storage space on devices.
Common mistakes: Compression shrinks file size, it doesn't grow it. Lossless compression keeps all data, it doesn't lose any.
