The OR gate
The OR gate has two inputs, A and B. Its output X is 1 when at least one input is 1, and 0 only when both are 0. Its truth table output column is 0 1 1 1.
Understanding The OR gate in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 2
What it does: The output is 0 for the row 0,0 and 1 for the other three rows, because at least one input is 1 in each of them. The expression names both inputs A and B and the output X, joined by the word OR. OR outputs 1 if A is 1, B is 1, or both. Only AND needs both inputs to be 1. The OR gate is written X = A OR B. X = A AND B is the expression for an AND gate. One input is 1, which is at least one, so the OR gate outputs 1.
Common mistakes: The OR gate output column is 0 1 1 1 because X is 1 whenever at least one input is 1. The column 0 0 0 1 belongs to the AND gate. Logic gate inputs are single bits, so B can only be 0 or 1. The line should be B <- 0.
