The AND gate
A logic gate with two inputs that outputs 1 only when both inputs are 1; otherwise it outputs 0. Written X = A AND B, drawn as a D shape, with truth table output 0 0 0 1.
Understanding The AND gate in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 2
What it does: AND outputs 1 only in the last row, where A and B are both 1. Every other row gives 0. The AND gate is written X = A AND B. OR is a different gate with a different expression. The AND symbol is a flat-backed D shape. A triangle with a circle is the NOT gate. Only one input is 1, so the AND condition is not met and the output is 0. An AND gate has two inputs, A and B, and one output, X. A gate with one input is the NOT gate. AND has output 0 0 0 1, so only the row A = 1, B = 1 gives 1. Three rows with output 1 describes OR.
Common mistakes: An AND gate only outputs 1 when both inputs are 1. When A is 1 and B is 0, X must be 0, so the row should be 1 0 | 0. The expression for an AND gate is X = A AND B. Using OR would give X = 1 for these inputs, which does not match the final line.
