Role of robots in entertainment

A robot used in toys, games, theme parks and film that moves or interacts to amuse people, such as robot pets, animatronics, drone light shows and film effects.

Understanding Role of robots in entertainment in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1

What it does: Drone light shows use many programmed drones with lights to entertain a crowd. In film, robots move cameras or create special effects with precise, repeatable movements. Robot toys and pets are entertainment robots because they move or react to amuse people. Welding is an industrial role. Animatronics are robotic figures that move and speak to entertain visitors. Packing goods is an industry role. A toy can be a robot if it has a mechanical structure, electrical components and is programmable. It is used for entertainment. The core idea is amusement through movement or interaction. Replacing dangerous jobs is a different role, such as in industry.

Common mistakes: The IF statement was opened with IF...THEN, so it must be closed with ENDIF, not ENDWHILE. The ENDWHILE belongs on the last line to close the loop. The IF line is missing the keyword THEN. It should be IF visitorNearby = TRUE THEN so the animatronic dinosaur roars when a visitor is near.

Quick Questions

1. Which is an example of a robot used in entertainment?
A. A robot pet that barks and wags its tail when stroked ✓
B. A robot arm that welds car panels in a factory
Robot toys and pets are entertainment robots because they move or react to amuse people. Welding is an industrial role.
2. What is the main purpose of a theme park animatronic?
A. To pick and pack products in a warehouse
B. To move and make sounds so that visitors are amused ✓
Animatronics are robotic figures that move and speak to entertain visitors. Packing goods is an industry role.
3. Which statement about drone light shows is correct?
A. One drone sprays crops with fertiliser over a farm
B. Many programmed drones fly together and light up to make shapes in the sky ✓
Drone light shows use many programmed drones as entertainment. Spraying crops is an agriculture role.
4. Why might a film studio use a robot camera arm?
A. It can repeat the exact same smooth movement for every take ✓
B. It can diagnose patients and prescribe medicine
Robots in filming and special effects repeat precise moves. Diagnosing patients is not an entertainment role.
5. Which is NOT a role of robots in entertainment?
A. Delivering goods between towns in a self-driving lorry ✓
B. Playing a game against a person as a robot opponent

Match the Pairs

robot pet → A toy robot that moves, makes sounds or reacts to touch so that a child is amused
animatronic → A robot figure in a theme park or film that moves and acts like a character or animal
A swarm of drones flies in programmed patterns to make a show in the night sky → drone light show
A robot arm moves a camera along the same path again and again for a film scene → filming robot
A robot vacuum cleaner is an entertainment robot → A robot vacuum cleaner is a domestic robot because it does household work. An entertainment robot moves or interacts to amuse people.
Theme park animatronics are not robots because they only entertain → Animatronics are robots because they have a mechanical structure, electrical parts and a program. Their purpose is to amuse people.

Key Term

entertainment robot
A robot used in toys, games, theme parks and film that moves or interacts to amuse people, such as robot pets, animatronics, drone light shows and film effects.

Fill in the Blanks

1. IF petSensor = "touched" THEN OUTPUT "Wag tail" ENDIF
Hint: Type the keyword that follows the condition in a robot pet's selection statement.
2. WHILE parkOpen = TRUE moveHead() ENDWHILE
Hint: Type the keyword that starts a loop where a theme park animatronic repeats its move as long as a condition holds.
3. FOR drone ← 1 TO 100 lightOn(drone) NEXT drone
Hint: Type the keyword that sets the end value of the count for the drone light show loop.
4. shotCount ← 0 shotCount ← shotCount + 1 OUTPUT shotCount
Hint: Type the arithmetic operator that increases the film robot's shot counter by one.
5. IF batteryLevel < 10 THEN OUTPUT "Toy robot needs charging" ENDIF
Hint: Type the comparison operator that checks whether the toy robot's battery is lower than the limit.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A WHILE petRobot.isOn = TRUE
B IF touchSensor = TRUE THEN
C petRobot.wagTail()
D ENDWHILE
E ENDWHILE
Line D — The IF statement was opened with IF...THEN, so it must be closed with ENDIF, not ENDWHILE. The ENDWHILE belongs on the last line to close the loop.
Question 2
A INPUT visitorNearby
B IF visitorNearby = TRUE
C dinosaur.roar()
D ENDIF
Line B — The IF line is missing the keyword THEN. It should be IF visitorNearby = TRUE THEN so the animatronic dinosaur roars when a visitor is near.
Question 3
A FOR i ← 1 TO 100
B drone[i].setColour(BLUE
C NEXT i
Line B — The closing bracket is missing. The call must be drone[i].setColour(BLUE) so each of the 100 light-show drones is set to blue.
Question 4
A cameraRobot.moveTo(startMark)
B cameraRobot.stopRecording()
C cameraRobot.moveTo(endMark)
Line B — The filming robot must start recording before it moves along its path. It should call startRecording(), not stopRecording().
Question 5
A count ← 0
B WHILE count < 4
C count ← count - 1
D toyRobot.spin()
E ENDWHILE
Line C — Subtracting 1 means count never reaches 4, so the toy robot would spin forever. It should be count ← count + 1.
