Identifying AI characteristics in a scenario

Read a scenario and find the data and rules, the reasoning, and any learning. Then quote evidence from the description, using the word because to link each quote to the characteristic it shows.

Understanding Identifying AI characteristics in a scenario in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1

What it does: The answer quotes what the system does with the answers and rules, and uses because to link the evidence to reasoning. Changing behaviour from past results is learning and adapting, and the because sentence links the evidence to it. A program that only follows fixed steps has no reasoning. Giving an output is not enough to show AI. The system still has stored rules, but nothing in the description shows it changing them. So learning is missing.

Common mistakes: Applying stored rules to the user's answers is reasoning, not learning. Nothing in the quiz improves or changes with use. Line 4 should be reasoning ← rules used on data. The legal moves are the rules the game follows. They are not the reasoning. The reasoning is choosing the best move. Line 3 should be rules ← legal moves.

Quick Questions

1. A quiz asks a patient about symptoms, compares the answers with stored illness rules and names the most likely illness. Which characteristic is shown by 'compares the answers with stored rules'?
A. Data and rules: the stored rules are the rules and the symptoms are data ✓
B. Learning: the system changes its own rules after each patient
The scenario only says the system compares answers with stored rules. It does not say that the rules change, so there is no evidence of learning.
2. A game program looks at the board, works out what each possible move could lead to and picks the best one. Which statement uses evidence correctly?
A. It shows reasoning because it works out what each possible move could lead to before choosing ✓
B. It shows reasoning because it is a game and games are always intelligent
A good answer quotes evidence from the description and links it with 'because'. Saying it is a game is not evidence of reasoning.
3. A program prints the same three instructions in the same order every time, whatever the user types. Does it show AI reasoning?
A. No, because it only follows fixed steps and does not use rules to reach a conclusion ✓
B. Yes, because it is a program that gives an output
A program that only follows fixed steps has no reasoning. Giving an output is not enough to show AI.
4. A chess program plays 1000 games against itself. After each game it changes how it values moves, and it wins more often. Which characteristic is the best evidence of learning?
A. It plays chess against an opponent
B. It changes how it values moves after each game and wins more often ✓
Learning means the system adapts using what has happened before. Changing its values and improving is that evidence. Playing chess alone is not.
5. Which answer correctly links a quote to a characteristic?
A. It has a rule base because it is a clever medical program
B. It has a rule base because the scenario says 'IF the fever is high THEN suspect flu' ✓
Quote the exact words from the scenario that prove the characteristic, then join them with 'because'. Vague praise is not evidence.

Match the Pairs

The program stores 200 symptoms and 500 if-then rules about illnesses. → Evidence of the data and rules characteristic: the system holds a collection of data and rules.
The chess program picks a move because it works out which move leads to a win. → Evidence of reasoning: the program uses its data and rules to reach a decision, linked with because.
A quiz-style diagnosis system asks questions, then uses the answers and its rules to reach a conclusion. This shows reasoning. → It shows reasoning because it uses my answers and its rules to reach a diagnosis.
A game-playing program that improves by remembering past games shows the ability to learn and adapt. → It shows learning because it changes its moves after losing earlier games.
A program follows fixed steps: add the prices, then print the total. This is AI because it uses a calculator. → Following fixed steps with no reasoning, rules or learning is not AI. Using a calculator is not an AI characteristic.
The system is AI. It asks questions and gives a diagnosis. → The answer gives no evidence and no because. It does not say which characteristic is shown or quote anything about data, rules, reasoning or learning.

Key Term

identify AI characteristics
Read a scenario and find the data and rules, the reasoning, and any learning. Then quote evidence from the description, using the word because to link each quote to the characteristic it shows.

Fill in the Blanks

1. rule ← "IF fever AND cough THEN flu" characteristic ← "data and rules"
Hint: Type the AI characteristic shown by a stored if-then rule in a quiz-style diagnosis system.
2. IF fever AND cough THEN diagnosis ← "flu"
Hint: Type the keyword that joins two facts so the system can reason to a conclusion.
3. Evidence: "changes strategy after a loss" Characteristic: ability to learn and adapt
Hint: Type the verb for what a game-playing program does when it improves from past games.
4. steps ← "add", "print", "stop" AI? No, because it has no reasoning
Hint: Type the yes or no answer: is a program that only follows fixed steps AI?
5. It reasons because it picks the best move
Hint: Type the linking word that connects a quote from the scenario to the characteristic it shows.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A scenario ← "quiz diagnosis"
B data ← symptom answers
C rules ← IF fever THEN flu
D learning ← rules used on data
Line D — Applying stored rules to the user's answers is reasoning, not learning. Nothing in the quiz improves or changes with use. Line 4 should be reasoning ← rules used on data.
Question 2
A scenario ← "chess program"
B data ← board positions
C reasoning ← legal moves
D reasoning ← picks the best move
Line C — The legal moves are the rules the game follows. They are not the reasoning. The reasoning is choosing the best move. Line 3 should be rules ← legal moves.
Question 3
A reasoning ← yes
B learning ← none
C verdict ← not AI
D because ← steps never change
Line A — A program that only follows fixed steps makes no decisions of its own, so it shows no reasoning. Line 1 should be reasoning ← none.
Question 4
A characteristic ← reasoning
B quote ← "links symptoms"
C because ← the system is fast
D verdict ← reasoning shown
Line C — The word because must link the quote to the characteristic. Speed is not evidence of reasoning. The because line should say it draws a result from the symptoms.
Question 5
A scenario ← "game learns"
B data ← deleted after each game
C learning ← updates its data
D because ← it improves with use
Line B — A game program can only learn if it keeps data from past games and uses it to improve. If the data is deleted, there is nothing to learn from. Line 2 should be data ← results of past games.
