Data integrity characteristic: timeliness
Data is timely when it is up to date and available when needed. Out-of-date records or delayed updates can lead to poor time-critical decisions.
Understanding Data integrity characteristic: timeliness in VCE Data Analytics U4O2
What it does: Because the stock count lags behind daily sales, staff work from old data and may sell items that are not in stock. Controllers must act within minutes, so the data has to be current and available straight away to be timely. Timeliness means data is up to date when it is needed. An old allergy list that misses recent changes is an out-of-date record, so timeliness is diminished. Timeliness is about currency and availability at the right moment, not about how much data is stored or where it is kept. Data can be correct but still not timely. For time-critical decisions, late data loses its value because the opportunity to act has passed.
Common mistakes: The age of a record is the current day minus the day it was last updated. Reversing the subtraction gives a negative age, so stale data would never be flagged. It should be age = 25 - last_update. Adding the sold items back shows the old stock level, not the up-to-date one. Timely data must show the current value, so it should print stock.
