APP 5: notifying people when collecting data
APP 5 says an organisation must tell people, at or before it collects their info, who is collecting it, why it is needed, and who it may be shared with.
Understanding APP 5: notifying people when collecting data in VCE Data Analytics U3O2
What it does: This line states the reason for collecting the email, which is the purpose APP 5 requires people to be told. APP 5 requires notice at or before collection (or as soon as practicable after), so people know what is happening before they hand over data. A good notice says who is collecting, why, and who it may be shared with. The vague one gives none of these. APP 5 means people must be told who their information may be shared with, including sponsors or other organisations. A clear, specific purpose lets people judge if the collection is fair. 'Various reasons' is too vague.
Common mistakes: APP 5 says the notice must tell people who is collecting their information. That is the organisation, not the user. It should be notice.who ← org. APP 5 requires the notice to give the real purpose of collection. 'Not sure yet' tells people nothing. It should state a clear purpose such as "Book a court".
