Data generated by artificial intelligence

New data, such as text, images or predictions, created by an AI system. Its quality depends on the data the AI was trained on, so students must verify it before use.

Understanding Data generated by artificial intelligence in VCE Data Analysis

What it does: The AI creates a new piece of data (the summary) from existing data, and it could leave out or distort key details. The predicted values come from patterns in the training data, so poor or biased training data leads to poor predictions. AI output can contain errors or made-up details, so students must check it against reliable sources before using it. A prediction created by an AI model is new data generated by AI. A survey response is primary data collected from a person. Synthetic data is created by a computer or AI to mimic real data patterns. It can be used for testing without exposing real people's details.

Common mistakes: The AI prediction is used straight away without being checked. AI-generated predictions must be verified against real data first, so line 4 should be verify(guess, real_sales). The synthetic data is being compared with itself, so the check proves nothing. It must be compared with the real data: check(synthetic, real).

Quick Questions

1. An AI chatbot writes a summary of a news article. What should you do before using it in your report?
A. Verify it against the original source ✓
B. Trust it because AI is always accurate
AI output can contain errors or made-up details, so students must check it against reliable sources before using it.
2. Which statement about AI-generated data is correct?
A. Its quality is always perfect, no matter what it was trained on
B. Its quality depends on the data the AI was trained on ✓
If the training data is biased, incomplete or inaccurate, the AI's output will often reflect those problems.
3. Which of these is an example of AI-generated data?
A. A prediction of next week's rainfall made by an AI model ✓
B. A paper survey form filled in by a classmate
A prediction created by an AI model is new data generated by AI. A survey response is primary data collected from a person.
4. What is synthetic data?
A. Data copied exactly from a census record
B. Artificial data generated to look like real data ✓
Synthetic data is created by a computer or AI to mimic real data patterns. It can be used for testing without exposing real people's details.
5. An AI is trained mostly on data about students from one city. Its predictions about all Victorian students will likely be:
A. Biased and less reliable ✓
B. Fair and fully representative
Training data that is not representative leads to biased output, which lowers the quality of the AI-generated data.

Match the Pairs

synthetic_data → Artificial data created by an AI system to imitate real data, for example fake customer records used for testing a database
verify(ai_output) → Check AI-generated content against reliable sources before using it
An AI summary of a report is new data generated from the report's text → summary = ai.summarise(report)
An AI prediction is only as good as the data used to train the model → forecast = model.predict(training_data)
use(ai_summary) // copied straight into report → The AI summary was used without being checked. AI output can be wrong, so it must be verified against the source first.
trust(prediction) because model is AI → Assuming AI output is correct just because an AI made it. Quality depends on the training data, which may be biased or incomplete.

Key Term

AI-generated data
New data, such as text, images or predictions, created by an AI system. Its quality depends on the data the AI was trained on, so students must verify it before use.

Fill in the Blanks

1. IF source = "AI" THEN verified ← FALSE ENDIF
Hint: Type the keyword that introduces the action to run when the IF condition is true.
2. =COUNTIF(D2:D50,"AI-generated")
Hint: Type the spreadsheet function that counts cells meeting a condition, to see how many rows are AI-generated.
3. data ← "biased" output ← generate(data)
Hint: Type the function name that makes new AI output from the training data it is given.
4. prediction ← "Sales will rise 20%" IF verified = TRUE THEN use(prediction)
Hint: Type the Boolean value that shows the AI output has been checked before it is used.
5. synthetic ← TRUE verified ← FALSE IF verified = TRUE THEN use(output)
Hint: Type the Boolean value that shows the AI-generated output has not been checked yet.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A train = load("sales.csv")
B model = train_model(train)
C guess = model.predict(2025)
D use_now(guess)
Line D — The AI prediction is used straight away without being checked. AI-generated predictions must be verified against real data first, so line 4 should be verify(guess, real_sales).
Question 2
A real = load("patients.csv")
B synthetic = ai_make(real, 50)
C check(synthetic, synthetic)
Line C — The synthetic data is being compared with itself, so the check proves nothing. It must be compared with the real data: check(synthetic, real).
Question 3
A report = read("report.txt")
B summary = ai_summarise(report)
C if check(summary, report)
D publish(summary)
Line C — The if statement is missing its colon at the end. It should be if check(summary, report): so the summary is only published after it has been checked.
Question 4
A prompt = "a koala on a beach"
B image = ai_draw(promt)
C label = "AI-generated"
D show(image, label)
Line B — The variable name is misspelt. promt was never created, so the program fails. It should be ai_draw(prompt).
Question 5
A ai_text = ai_write("climate)
B facts = find_facts(ai_text)
C verified = check_all(facts)
Line A — The string is missing its closing quotation mark. It should be ai_write("climate") so the AI can generate the text.
