The unit ladder: byte to exbibyte
The storage unit ladder from smallest to largest. Above the byte, each unit is 1024 times the one before: 1 KiB = 1024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB, and so on up to EiB.
Understanding The unit ladder: byte to exbibyte in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1
What it does: This lists every unit in size order: bit, nibble (4 bits), byte (8 bits), then KiB up to EiB. GiB is one step above MiB, so it is 1024 times larger, which is the rule for every step above the byte. The order is KiB, MiB, GiB. GiB (gibibyte) is the next unit up from MiB. KiB is the unit below MiB. The binary units KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB and EiB each go up by a factor of 1024, which is 2 to the power of 10. The ladder is bit, nibble, byte, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB, EiB. EiB is at the top and PiB is just below it.
Common mistakes: Each binary unit above the byte is 1024 times the one before, not 1000. It should be 1 MiB = 1024 KiB. The ladder must run from smallest to largest. KiB is smaller than MiB, so the order should be 'byte', 'KiB', 'MiB'.
