Exbibyte (EiB)
Exbibyte: a unit of data storage equal to 1024 pebibytes (PiB). It is the largest unit in the IGCSE syllabus.
Understanding Exbibyte (EiB) in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1
What it does: Each EiB holds 1024 PiB, so going down one unit means multiplying by 1024. 1 EiB = 1024 PiB. Storage units in the IGCSE syllabus go up in steps of 1024, not 1000. The ladder goes bit, nibble, byte, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB, PiB, EiB. The EiB is at the top. EiB is the binary unit symbol. The 'i' shows it is based on 1024. EB is the decimal exabyte, which uses 1000. The order is TiB, then PiB, then EiB. So PiB is the unit just below the EiB. Prefixes like kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi, pebi and exbi are binary prefixes. Each step is 1024 times bigger.
Common mistakes: EiB is a larger unit than PiB, so converting PiB to EiB means dividing by 1024. It should be eib = pib / 1024. Going from a larger unit (EiB) to a smaller one (PiB) means multiplying by 1024, not dividing. It should be pib = eib * factor.
