Advantage of robots: safer work

Robots can do dangerous tasks, such as working with heat, chemicals or heavy loads, so people are not put at risk of injury.

Understanding Advantage of robots: safer work in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1

What it does: The robot does the dangerous chemical task, so people are not exposed to the poison and are not put at risk. Heavy lifting can cause back injuries and accidents, so a robot doing it means fewer injuries for people. Robots can do the dangerous work, so fewer people are hurt. Robots can still break down. The advantage of robots is that they take on dangerous jobs, so the person should be replaced by a robot here.

Common mistakes: The IF statement is missing THEN. It should be IF temperature > 800 THEN, so the robot goes into the very hot furnace instead of a person. The robot should defuse the bomb so that no person is put at risk. The line should be robot.defuse().

Quick Questions

1. Which is an advantage of using a robot for bomb disposal?
A. The robot takes the risk, so no person is put in danger ✓
B. The robot never needs to be programmed
Robots can work in dangerous places so people are not put at risk of injury.
2. A factory process uses very hot molten metal. Why might a robot be used?
A. Robots are always cheaper to buy than workers
B. It can work in extreme heat without being harmed like a person ✓
Safety is the advantage here: the robot does the hot, dangerous task so people avoid burns.
3. True or false: Using robots to handle toxic chemicals can reduce injuries to workers.
A. True ✓
B. False
The robot handles the harmful chemicals, so people are not exposed to them.
4. Which task is the best example of a robot making work safer?
A. Lifting very heavy loads in a factory ✓
B. Choosing the colour of a company logo
Heavy lifting can injure people. A robot can do it safely.
5. Which statement describes a safety advantage of robots?
A. Robots can never break down
B. Fewer accidents and injuries happen in dangerous jobs ✓
Robots can do the dangerous work, so fewer people are hurt. Robots can still break down.

Match the Pairs

robot.defuse(bomb) → A robot disarms a bomb so a person does not have to go near it
robot.enter(furnace, 1200) → A robot works in a very hot place that would burn or harm a person
A robot handles toxic chemicals so workers are not poisoned → robot.pour(toxicChemical)
A robot lifts heavy loads so fewer workers get injured → robot.lift(heavyLoad)
worker.defuse(bomb) → A person is sent to do the dangerous bomb task. A robot should do it so that no one is put at risk of injury.
worker.enter(toxicRoom) → A person goes into a toxic place. This breaks the idea of safer work, because a robot should go in instead.

Key Term

Robots do dangerous tasks
Robots can do dangerous tasks, such as working with heat, chemicals or heavy loads, so people are not put at risk of injury.

Fill in the Blanks

1. IF bomb = TRUE THEN SEND robot ENDIF
Hint: Type the machine that is sent into the dangerous place so that a person is not put at risk.
2. IF temp > 800 THEN SEND robot ENDIF
Hint: Type the keyword that starts a selection and checks whether the furnace is too hot for people.
3. IF robotDoesTask = TRUE THEN injuries ← 0 ENDIF
Hint: Type the number of injuries to people when a robot does the hazardous task.
4. IF gasLevel > 50 THEN SEND robot ENDIF
Hint: Type the comparison operator that checks whether the toxic gas level is above the safe limit.
5. IF load > 500 THEN SEND robot ENDIF
Hint: Type the keyword that closes the selection after the robot is sent to move the heavy load.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A IF temperature > 800
B robot.enterFurnace()
C robot.collect(sample)
D ENDIF
Line A — The IF statement is missing THEN. It should be IF temperature > 800 THEN, so the robot goes into the very hot furnace instead of a person.
Question 2
A INPUT bombFound
B IF bombFound = TRUE THEN
C person.defuse()
D ENDIF
Line C — The robot should defuse the bomb so that no person is put at risk. The line should be robot.defuse().
Question 3
A WHILE gasLevel > 50
B robot.enter(tank)
C robot.clean(tank)
D ENDIF
Line D — A WHILE loop must be closed with ENDWHILE, not ENDIF. The robot cleans the toxic tank so no person has to breathe in the gas.
Question 4
A heat ← sensor.read()
B IF heat > 1000 THEN
C robot.work()
D humans.stayOut ← FALSE
E ENDIF
Line D — Humans must stay out of the extreme heat so they are not at risk. stayOut should be set to TRUE, not FALSE.
Question 5
A load ← 500
B IF load > 100 THEN
C robot.lift(load
D ENDIF
Line C — The closing bracket is missing. It should be robot.lift(load), so the robot lifts the heavy load instead of a worker.
