What a code repository is

A storage location for a project's files and full change history. It can be local or remote (e.g. GitHub), lets a team share code, and keeps a backup of every version.

Understanding What a code repository is in VCE Software Development U4O1

What it does: This links the local repository to a remote one on GitHub, which is the shared copy the team uses. git log lists the saved commits stored in the repository, showing the history that lets you recover earlier versions. A repository stores the project's files AND the history of every change made to them. Remote repositories are hosted online (e.g. GitHub), so they can be reached from other computers. Keeping every version is what makes a repository a backup of the code and lets you go back after a mistake.

Common mistakes: The folder was created as my_game, so cd must use the same name: cd my_game. Then git init turns that folder into a local repository. The command is git log, not git logs. It shows the full change history stored in the repository.

Quick Questions

1. Which best describes a code repository?
A. A program that runs and tests your code automatically
B. A storage location holding a project's files and full change history ✓
A repository stores the project's files AND the history of every change made to them.
2. A repository stored on your own computer is called...
A. A local repository ✓
B. A remote repository
A local repository lives on your own device. A remote repository is hosted elsewhere, such as on GitHub.
3. Which is an example of a remote repository?
A. A project hosted on GitHub ✓
B. A project folder saved on your laptop's desktop
Remote repositories are hosted online (e.g. GitHub), so they can be reached from other computers.
4. True or false: a repository only stores the latest version of the files.
A. False: it stores the full change history ✓
B. True: older versions are thrown away
A repository keeps every saved version, so you can look back at or restore earlier work.
5. How does a remote repository help a team of developers?
A. Each member must keep a private copy that nobody else can see
B. Team members can all access and share the same code ✓
Shared access is a key benefit: everyone on the team can get the project's code from the one repository.

Match the Pairs

git init → Creates a new local repository in the current folder so Git starts tracking the project's files and history
git clone https://github.com/team/app.git → Copies a remote repository from GitHub onto your computer, including its full change history
A remote repository is hosted online so a whole team can share access to the same project → git remote add origin https://github.com/team/app.git
A repository keeps the full change history, so every saved version of the code acts as a backup → git log
A local repository is stored on GitHub so teammates can all access it → A local repository is stored on your own computer. A repository hosted online, such as on GitHub, is a remote repository.
A repository only stores the latest copy of each file and no earlier versions → A repository stores the full change history, not just the latest files, so earlier versions can be recovered.

Key Term

repository
A storage location for a project's files and full change history. It can be local or remote (e.g. GitHub), lets a team share code, and keeps a backup of every version.

Fill in the Blanks

1. git init
Hint: Type the git subcommand that creates a new, empty local repository in the current folder.
2. git clone https://github.com/team/app.git
Hint: Type the git subcommand that copies a remote repository, with its full history, onto your computer.
3. git remote -v
Hint: Type the git subcommand that lists the remote repositories linked to this project.
4. git log --oneline
Hint: Type the git subcommand that shows the repository's stored change history.
5. git push origin main
Hint: Type the git subcommand that uploads local commits to the remote repository so the team gets them and a backup exists.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A mkdir my_game
B cd my_games
C git init
D git status
Line B — The folder was created as my_game, so cd must use the same name: cd my_game. Then git init turns that folder into a local repository.
Question 2
A git init
B git add main.py
C git commit -m "First save"
D git logs
Line D — The command is git log, not git logs. It shows the full change history stored in the repository.
Question 3
A git add notes.txt
B git commit "Add notes"
C git push
Line B — git commit needs the -m flag before the message: git commit -m "Add notes". The commit saves a snapshot into the repository history.
Question 4
A git new
B git add .
C git commit -m "Start"
Line A — A new local repository is created with git init. git new is not a git command.
Question 5
A git add .
B git commit -m "Add login"
C git pull origin main
Line C — To back up commits to the remote repository (e.g. GitHub) you push them: git push origin main. git pull downloads changes instead.
