Evaluation strategy: time frame

The part of an evaluation strategy that states when the solution will be evaluated and when data will be collected, such as set dates or a timeline.

Understanding Evaluation strategy: time frame in VCE Software Development U4O1

What it does: An evaluation timeline gives the period in which the solution is evaluated, with clear start and end dates. Data collection dates can be set as a repeating schedule so the data is gathered at planned, regular times. The time frame answers 'when'. Responsibility answers 'who', which is a different part of the strategy. A time frame keeps the evaluation organised. It doesn't change the solution itself.

Common mistakes: The evaluation date is before data collection starts, so there would be no data to evaluate. The evaluation must come after collect_end, for example "2025-11-14". The comma between the text and the variable is missing, which is a syntax error. It should be print("Evaluate:", eval_date).

Quick Questions

1. What does the time frame of an evaluation strategy state?
A. When the solution will be evaluated and when data will be collected ✓
B. Who is responsible for evaluating the solution
The time frame answers 'when'. Responsibility answers 'who', which is a different part of the strategy.
2. Which is the best example of a time frame?
A. Survey users on 12 March and review the results by 19 March ✓
B. Survey users to see if they like the solution
A time frame includes specific dates or a timeline. The wrong answer says what to do but gives no timing.
3. Which sub-theme belongs in a time frame?
A. Data collection dates ✓
B. The names of the evaluators
Data collection dates say when data is gathered. Names of evaluators belong under responsibility.
4. A time frame is set out as an evaluation timeline. True or false?
A. False: a timeline is never part of an evaluation strategy
B. True: it can list the dates in order, such as collect data, analyse, then report ✓
An evaluation timeline puts the key dates in order, so everyone knows when each step happens.
5. Which statement is a weak time frame?
A. Collect usage data for two weeks from 1 June, then evaluate on 15 June
B. Evaluate the solution sometime after it is finished ✓
'Sometime after' gives no dates. A strong time frame is specific, so the evaluation can be planned and checked.

Match the Pairs

Time frame: evaluate in Week 10 after release → States when the solution will be evaluated, giving a fixed point in the timeline
Data collected: 3 Mar, 10 Mar and 17 Mar → Lists the data collection dates so each round of data is gathered at a set time
A time frame sets an evaluation timeline with a start and an end → Evaluation timeline: 1 Nov to 30 Nov
A time frame can link data collection to a repeated schedule → Collect response times every Friday for 4 weeks
Time frame: evaluate the solution when we have time → This is vague and gives no date or timeline, so it does not state when the solution will be evaluated
Time frame: survey users about speed → It says what data to collect but not when to collect it, so there are no data collection dates

Key Term

time frame
The part of an evaluation strategy that states when the solution will be evaluated and when data will be collected, such as set dates or a timeline.

Fill in the Blanks

1. timeframe = "5 Oct to 19 Oct" print(timeframe)
Hint: Type the variable name set on the line above that holds the evaluation dates.
2. datadates = ["5 Oct", "12 Oct", "19 Oct"] print(len(datadates))
Hint: Type the built-in function that counts how many data collection dates are in the list.
3. datadates = ["5 Oct", "12 Oct", "19 Oct"] for date in datadates: print("Collect data on", date)
Hint: Type the loop variable that holds each data collection date in turn.
4. datadates = ["5 Oct", "12 Oct", "19 Oct"] print("Start:", datadates[0])
Hint: Type the index number of the first date in the timeline.
5. timeline = ["Week 1", "Week 3"] timeline.append("Week 5")
Hint: Type the list method that adds a new date to the end of the evaluation timeline.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A strategy = "Evaluation plan"
B eval_date = "2025-10-20"
C collect_start = "2025-11-03"
D collect_end = "2025-11-10"
Line B — The evaluation date is before data collection starts, so there would be no data to evaluate. The evaluation must come after collect_end, for example "2025-11-14".
Question 2
A collect_start = "2025-11-03"
B collect_end = "2025-11-10"
C eval_date = "2025-11-14"
D print("Evaluate:" eval_date)
Line D — The comma between the text and the variable is missing, which is a syntax error. It should be print("Evaluate:", eval_date).
Question 3
A time_frame = {
B "collect_start": "3 Nov",
C "collect_end": "10 Nov",
D "evaluate" "14 Nov"
E }
Line D — A dictionary entry needs a colon between the key and the value. It should be "evaluate": "14 Nov".
Question 4
A timeline = {
B "Term 3 Wk 2: user survey",
C "Term 3 Wk 4: test speed",
D "Term 3 Wk 6: final report"
E ]
Line A — The evaluation timeline is a list, so it must open with [ to match the closing ]. Using { is a syntax error.
Question 5
A start = 3
B end = 10
C for day in range(start, end)
D print("Collect:", day)
Line C — A for loop header must end with a colon. It should be for day in range(start, end): so the loop can step through each data collection day.
