Identifying a Need or Opportunity
A problem worth solving or a gap worth exploring, forming the starting point for developing a digital solution
Understanding Identifying a Need or Opportunity in VCE Innovative Solutions
What it does: Observation is a technique used to uncover needs and opportunities by watching user behaviour. Identifying a need or opportunity is the starting point before any solution design begins. A need is a current problem that people are experiencing. An opportunity can be an improvement to something existing, not just a brand-new invention. Surveys are a useful way to gather information that reveals needs or opportunities. Needs are current problems, while opportunities are gaps or possible improvements — they're related but different. This describes an opportunity — a gap worth exploring or improving. Assuming a need without research risks misunderstanding what people actually require.
Common mistakes: A need is not always brand new — it's simply a current problem people face, which may already be known. Opportunities and needs are related but different — an opportunity is a gap, while a need is a current problem.
