Functions and Capabilities of Digital Systems
A digital system designed to help people with disabilities perform tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible, such as screen readers, hearing aids and communication devices
Understanding Functions and Capabilities of Digital Systems in VCE Innovative Solutions
What it does: These examples each demonstrate a different form of assistive technology — all designed to extend the capabilities of people with sensory, physical or communication disabilities. GPS devices receive signals from satellites orbiting Earth to calculate the user's precise location. Traffic management systems monitor and control vehicle flow on roads — a different function. GPS relies on line-of-sight satellite signals, which work best outdoors. Wi-Fi is not required for GPS positioning, though it may improve accuracy or help load map data. Digital financial services are designed to give individuals convenient access to banking, payments and investment — they are not restricted to large institutions.
Common mistakes: Assistive technologies are used in homes, schools, workplaces and public spaces — not only in hospitals and clinics. They support people with disabilities in any setting where they need help to perform tasks. Line 2 is wrong. GPS does not require an internet connection to determine location — it uses signals from satellites in orbit. An internet connection may be needed to download maps but is not required for the GPS positioning itself. Line 1 is wrong.
