Clarifying data refresh requirements
Statements of how often, how and by whom the data behind a dynamic visualisation is updated, e.g. a daily automatic refresh from the data source.
Understanding Clarifying data refresh requirements in VCE Data Analytics U4O1
What it does: This states how the refresh happens (automatically) and which data source and connection it uses. A clear refresh requirement states how often (daily at 6 am), how (automatic) and from where (the sales database). 'Up to date somehow' is too vague to test. The frequency should match how quickly the data changes and how quickly decisions are made. Yearly updates would leave the canteen with out-of-date figures. A 'last updated' stamp does not change the refresh speed. It tells viewers how recent the data is so they can judge whether to rely on it.
Common mistakes: The refresh is scheduled and owned by the system, so the method must be automatic. A manual method contradicts the schedule. It should be 'Method: automatic'. A live bus times dashboard must be refreshed often. 'never' is not a usable frequency and means the data would go stale. It should be something like 'Frequency: every 1 minute'.
