Purpose of APA referencing
A system that credits the sources of data and information using in-text citations linked to a reference list. It respects intellectual property and helps avoid plagiarism.
Understanding Purpose of APA referencing in VCE Data Analysis
What it does: The citation credits the ABS as the creator of the data, which respects their intellectual property. The author and year in the citation match the start of the reference list entry, so the reader can find the full source. APA referencing credits the people or organisations whose data and information you have used. Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or data as your own. Citing and listing the source avoids it. Both parts are needed. The short citation in your text links to the full details at the end. Changing the wording does not change who the ideas or data came from, so you still cite them.
Common mistakes: The in-text citation names Lee, so the reference list entry must start with the same author, Lee. Kim does not match, so the citation is not linked to its entry. APA referencing helps students avoid plagiarism by acknowledging sources. It does not allow plagiarism. It should say '3. Avoid plagiarism'.
