Privacy Act 1988 (Cwlth)
Commonwealth legislation that sets rules for how organisations must collect, use, and store people's personal information.
Understanding Privacy Act 1988 (Cwlth) in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: Commonwealth legislation applies across the whole country at the federal level. Since breaking the Act has legal consequences, organisations are expected to comply with it. Organisations must follow rules when gathering personal information from people. How personal information can be used is also covered by the Act. Storing personal information securely is part of what the Act requires.
Common mistakes: Line 1 says it is state-only legislation, but the Privacy Act 1988 is actually Commonwealth, or federal, legislation. Line 2 says there are no rules for collecting data, but the Act sets rules for how personal information is collected.
