Denial of service attacks
An attack that floods a target with traffic, overwhelming its resources and blocking legitimate users
Understanding Denial of service attacks in VCE Cyber Security
What it does: Excessive traffic overwhelms system resources, causing the server to slow or crash. When a service is overwhelmed, genuine users are unable to access it. DoS attacks send large amounts of traffic to overwhelm a target's resources. A DDoS attack uses many devices at once, distinguishing it from a single-source DoS attack. A DoS attack degrades performance by overwhelming system resources. Attackers deliberately overload resources so the system can't handle legitimate requests. A denial of service attack is defined by overwhelming a target to deny access. Assuming a DoS attack improves uptime ignores that it is designed to disrupt service.
Common mistakes: Wrong — a DoS attack slows or disrupts a server, it does not boost speed. Wrong — DoS attacks harm users by blocking access, they do not help them.
