Australian Privacy Principle 11

Requires organisations to protect personal information from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access, and to destroy it when no longer needed.

Understanding Australian Privacy Principle 11 in VCE Cyber Security

What it does: Security under Principle 11 covers protecting information from misuse, loss, and unauthorised access. De-identification is an alternative that removes identifying details while keeping the data itself. Keeping information secure is the core focus of Principle 11. Misuse is one of the risks Principle 11 requires organisations to protect against. Getting rid of unneeded information reduces the risk of it being misused later. Unneeded personal information should be destroyed or de-identified, not kept indefinitely. Leaving information unprotected directly goes against the requirement to keep it secure.

Common mistakes: Line 1 says to leave data unprotected, but Principle 11 requires personal information to be kept secure. Line 2 says to allow unauthorised access, but the principle requires protecting data from unauthorised access.
