Application of firmware

Installing the latest low-level software on a hardware device to patch known security vulnerabilities.

Understanding Application of firmware in VCE Cyber Security

What it does: This code applies the latest firmware, fixing known vulnerabilities in the device. Prompt updates close known vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them. Unpatched firmware flaws are documented and can be actively targeted by attackers. Firmware is the embedded software that runs on hardware devices like routers. Regular checks ensure vulnerabilities are patched as soon as fixes are released. Rolling back firmware undoes the security fixes that the update applied. Restoring the old firmware undoes the patch and reintroduces the vulnerability.

Common mistakes: Line 1 sets skip_firmware to True, which skips applying the needed firmware update. Line 2 delays the update, leaving a hardware vulnerability unpatched.

Quick Questions

1. Applying firmware updates helps patch security vulnerabilities in a device.
A. False
B. True ✓
Firmware updates fix known security flaws in the device's low-level software.
2. Which is safer: applying firmware updates promptly, or postponing them indefinitely?
A. Applying updates promptly ✓
B. Postponing them indefinitely
Prompt updates close known vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit them.
3. A router running outdated firmware is just as secure as one with the latest firmware.
A. False ✓
B. True
Outdated firmware may still contain known, unpatched vulnerabilities.
4. Which poses more risk: a device with the latest firmware, or one with known unpatched firmware flaws?
A. Known unpatched firmware flaws ✓
B. Latest firmware
Unpatched firmware flaws are documented and can be actively targeted by attackers.
5. Firmware updates only apply to software, never to hardware devices.
A. True
B. False ✓
Firmware is the embedded software that runs on hardware devices like routers.

Match the Pairs

if version != latest: apply_update() → Checking if firmware is outdated and applying an update
skip_firmware = True → Disabling firmware checks, leaving the device outdated
Applying firmware updates patches known hardware vulnerabilities → apply_update(latest_firmware)
Checking a device's firmware version confirms if it needs patching → check_firmware()
postpone_update() → The mistake: indefinitely delaying a required firmware update
restore_old_fw() → The mistake: reverting to outdated, unpatched firmware after updating

Key Term

Applying firmware
Installing the latest low-level software on a hardware device to patch known security vulnerabilities.

Fill in the Blanks

1. firmware_version = "1.0"
Hint: Type the name of the variable storing the device's installed firmware version.
2. latest_firmware = "2.0"
Hint: Type the name of the variable storing the latest available firmware version.
3. if current != latest:
Hint: Type the comparison operator that checks if the two firmware versions are different.
4. def check_firmware():
Hint: Type the name of the function that checks the device's firmware.
5. firmware_applied = True
Hint: Type the name of the variable that flags whether the firmware update has been applied.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A skip_firmware = True
B check_firmware()
C apply_update()
Line A — Line 1 sets skip_firmware to True, which skips applying the needed firmware update.
Question 2
A check_firmware()
B delay_update = True
C apply_update()
Line B — Line 2 delays the update, leaving a hardware vulnerability unpatched.
Question 3
A version = get_firmware()
B latest = get_latest_fw()
C if version < latest: pass
Line C — Line 3 does nothing when firmware is outdated, instead of applying the update.
Question 4
A ignore_vuln = True
B known_vuln = True
C apply_patch()
Line A — Line 1 ignores a known vulnerability instead of applying a firmware patch to fix it.
Question 5
A fw = get_latest_fw()
B apply(fw)
C fw = "1.0"
Line C — Line 3 reverts the firmware back to the old, outdated version after the update.
