Jitter
The variation in latency between packets, so they arrive at uneven intervals. Measured in milliseconds, it disrupts voice and video unless a jitter buffer smooths it.
Understanding Jitter in QCE Digital Solutions Unit 4
What it does: Taking the difference between two latency values in ms shows how much the delay varied from one packet to the next. Voice and video need packets at steady intervals, so a high jitter value in ms means choppy audio and frozen frames, which the check flags. Jitter measures how much the gaps vary. Evenly spaced packets mean low jitter, even if each delay is fairly large. Jitter is a time measurement, so it uses milliseconds. Mbps is used for bandwidth. A file download can wait for all packets to arrive, so uneven timing does not matter. A live call needs smooth, steady timing.
Common mistakes: Jitter is the variation in latency, so you find the difference between the two latencies, not their sum. It should be jitter = abs(second - first). Using = overwrites total on every loop, so only the last difference is kept. It should be total += abs(t[i]-t[i-1]) so all the differences add up.
