Properties of a system
The traits of a system as a whole: its purpose, its components and how they interact, and emergent behaviour that no single part has alone.
Understanding Properties of a system in QCE Digital Solutions Unit 3
What it does: Purpose is a system property: it states what the whole system is for, and the code records it as a single statement. The cart component supplies items and the calculation component uses them, which shows an interaction between parts. Components are the parts that make up the system, such as a database, interface or payment service. A goal is the purpose, not a part. Interactions are the ways parts exchange data or signals with each other. Colour is a feature of a single part. Emergent behaviour arises from interactions between components. For example, a traffic-light network can clear congestion although no single light plans it.
Common mistakes: The string is missing its closing quote. A system's purpose is a statement of what it is for, so it must be written as a complete string: purpose = "Sell tickets". The comma between list items is missing. The components of the system must be separate items: ["sensor", "alarm"].
