DIV: whole-number quotient
Divides a by b and returns only the whole number part, discarding any remainder. DIV(10, 3) returns 3, so it counts how many whole groups of 3 fit into 10.
Understanding DIV: whole-number quotient in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 2
What it does: 30 divided by 4 is 7.5, so DIV(30, 4) gives 7 whole groups, which is stored in Groups. Dividing Minutes by 60 with DIV gives only the whole hours and ignores any leftover minutes. The remainder is what MOD returns. DIV returns how many whole times b fits into a. 10 does not fit into 7 even once, so the number of whole groups is 0. DIV never rounds up. DIV always discards the fractional part and never rounds. Rounding is done by ROUND. In this case DIV(17, 5) gives 3. DIV takes two arguments separated by a comma: DIV(200, 60), which gives 3. Writing 200 / 60 as a single argument is incorrect.
Common mistakes: DIV needs its two arguments separated by a comma. It should be DIV(135, 60), which returns 2. The variable declared and assigned is Groups, not Group. The line should be OUTPUT Groups so it shows 3.
