Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division operators
The arithmetic operators in pseudocode: + adds, - subtracts, * multiplies and / divides. Example: Answer ← Score * 100 / MaxMark stores the result in a variable.
Understanding Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division operators in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 2
What it does: This expression uses * for multiplication and / for division, and ← stores the result in Answer. The + symbol adds the two values, and the result is assigned to Total using the ← operator. Pseudocode uses the asterisk * for multiplication. The letter x is not an operator, so it would be read as an identifier. Division is written with the forward slash /. The ÷ symbol is not used in pseudocode expressions. The variable being assigned to goes on the left of ←, and the expression goes on the right. Score * 100 is 4500, and 4500 / 60 is 75. Operators * and / are worked out from left to right, so the multiplication happens first.
Common mistakes: The letter x is not a multiplication operator in pseudocode. Multiplication uses *, so the line should be Total ← Price * 3. A value is stored in a variable with the assignment arrow ←, not =. The line should be MaxMark ← 60.
