The three characteristics of a robot together

A device is a robot only if it has all three: a mechanical structure, electrical components and a program. If any one is missing, it is not a robot.

Understanding The three characteristics of a robot together in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1

What it does: A full answer gives one example under each of the three headings: structure, electrical parts and program. With AND, all three must be True. One False makes is_robot False, so the device is not a robot. A robot needs all three characteristics. Without a program it cannot be told what to do, so it is not a robot. Having only two of the three is not enough. All three characteristics must be present. A metal arm and wheels are part of the mechanical structure. Sensors, motors and circuits are electrical components.

Common mistakes: A device is a robot only if it has all three characteristics (mechanical structure, electrical components and a program), so needed should be 3, not 2. OR would accept a device with only one characteristic. All three are needed, so the line should use AND: IF mech AND elec AND prog THEN.

Quick Questions

1. Which list gives the three characteristics of a robot?
A. Mechanical structure, a screen, a keyboard
B. Mechanical structure, electrical components, a program ✓
The Cambridge 0478 syllabus names three characteristics: a mechanical structure, electrical components and a program.
2. A device has a metal frame and a motor and is powered by a circuit, but it has no program. Is it a robot?
A. No, because it has no program ✓
B. Yes, because it has a frame and a motor
A robot needs all three characteristics. Without a program it cannot be told what to do, so it is not a robot.
3. A robot vacuum cleaner has a body, motors, sensors, circuits and a program. Which statement is correct?
A. It is not a robot because it is used at home
B. It is a robot because it has all three characteristics ✓
Where a device is used does not matter. What matters is that it has a mechanical structure, electrical components and a program.
4. Which exam answer describes a robot using the three headings?
A. It has a mechanical structure (arm), electrical components (motors, sensors) and a program that controls it ✓
B. It is a machine that is very fast, very strong and never needs to be switched off
A good answer names each of the three characteristics and links each one to a part of the robot.
5. A toy car is made of plastic and has a battery and a motor. It is driven by a remote and has no program. Which is true?
A. It is missing one characteristic, so it is not a robot ✓
B. It has two characteristics, so it counts as a robot
Having only two of the three is not enough. All three characteristics must be present.

Match the Pairs

mechanical structure + electrical components + program → The three characteristics a device must have together to count as a robot
mechanical structure + electrical components + NO program → Not a robot, because one of the three characteristics is missing (it cannot be programmed)
Describing a robot using the three headings in an exam answer → Mechanical structure: metal arm | Electrical components: motors, sensors | Program: instructions it follows
Missing one characteristic means the device is not a robot → has_structure = True has_electrical = True has_program = False is_robot = has_structure AND has_electrical AND has_program
A toaster has a metal body and electrical parts, so it is a robot. → It has no program that controls its actions, so one characteristic is missing. All three are needed.
A robot only needs a program to be a robot: is_robot = has_program → A robot needs all three characteristics, not just a program. It also needs a mechanical structure and electrical components.

Key Term

mechanical structure + electrical components + program
A device is a robot only if it has all three: a mechanical structure, electrical components and a program. If any one is missing, it is not a robot.

Fill in the Blanks

1. IF structure AND electrical AND program THEN OUTPUT "Robot" ENDIF
Hint: Type the logic operator that makes the test true only when all three characteristics are present.
2. IF program = FALSE THEN OUTPUT "Not a robot" ENDIF
Hint: Type the Boolean value that means the device has no program, so one characteristic is missing.
3. count ← 3 IF count = 3 THEN OUTPUT "Robot"
Hint: Type the comparison operator that checks the count equals the number of characteristics needed.
4. FOR i ← 1 TO 3 OUTPUT characteristic[i] NEXT i
Hint: Type the keyword that sets the end of the loop range so all three characteristics are listed.
5. IF NOT electrical THEN OUTPUT "Not a robot" ENDIF
Hint: Type the logic operator that reverses the value, so the test is true when electrical components are missing.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A needed ← 2
B found ← 3
C IF found = needed THEN
D OUTPUT "Robot"
E ENDIF
Line A — A device is a robot only if it has all three characteristics (mechanical structure, electrical components and a program), so needed should be 3, not 2.
Question 2
A mech ← TRUE
B elec ← TRUE
C prog ← TRUE
D IF mech OR elec OR prog THEN
E OUTPUT "Robot"
F ENDIF
Line D — OR would accept a device with only one characteristic. All three are needed, so the line should use AND: IF mech AND elec AND prog THEN.
Question 3
A // Toaster: no program inside
B mech ← TRUE
C prog ← TRUE
D elec ← TRUE
E OUTPUT mech AND elec AND prog
Line C — The comment says a toaster has no program, so prog should be FALSE. Because one characteristic is missing, the toaster is not a robot.
Question 4
A PROCEDURE IsRobot(m, e, p)
B RETURN m AND e AND p
C ENDFUNCTION
Line A — This block returns a value (TRUE or FALSE) and ends with ENDFUNCTION, so it must start with FUNCTION, not PROCEDURE.
Question 5
A OUTPUT "A robot needs:"
B OUTPUT "Mechanical structure"
C OUTPUT "Wheels"
D OUTPUT "A program"
Line C — Wheels are not one of the three characteristics, because a robot can move in other ways. The second characteristic is electrical components.
