System software
Software that provides the services the computer needs to run, such as the operating system and utility software, often working in the background without the user asking.
Understanding System software in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1
What it does: The list shows that system software includes both the operating system and utility software. The scan starts and runs by itself while the user does other things, which is typical of system software. For example, an operating system manages memory and files, and antivirus scans for threats, even when the user has not asked.
Common mistakes: The print call is missing its closing bracket. It should be print(system_software). System software such as antivirus often runs in the background without the user asking. The message should say it runs quietly, not that the user starts it.
