Integrated development environment (IDE)
Integrated development environment: one program, such as IDLE, Thonny or Visual Studio, with the tools to write, run and test code. It is not a language or a translator.
Understanding Integrated development environment (IDE) in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1
What it does: The word integrated means combined: the IDE joins the tools a programmer needs into a single application. Thonny (the IDE) is the tool, while Python is the language the program is written in. The two are different things. An IDE combines several tools in one application. It is not a programming language. IDLE (for Python) and Visual Studio are both IDEs. They give programmers one place to write, run and test code. An IDE is not itself a translator. It can contain a translator as one of its tools, alongside the editor and error diagnostics. An IDE helps programmers by combining tools in one program. Code still needs a compiler or interpreter to be translated.
Common mistakes: IDLE is an IDE, a program with tools for writing, running and testing code. It is not a language. The comment should say IDLE is an IDE for Python. The closing bracket is missing. An IDE's error diagnostics would flag this. The line should be print(total).
