Understanding General-purpose computer in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1
What it does: One laptop runs several different programs, which shows it is general-purpose. After installing a video editor, the same PC can do a new job, which shows it is flexible. The hardware stays the same. The computer changes what it does by running different programs (applications). Being able to install new software so the computer can do new jobs is a key feature of a general-purpose computer. PCs and laptops are general-purpose. A digital thermostat is an embedded system built for one job.
Common mistakes: A microwave is an embedded system built for one job. A general-purpose computer is a PC or laptop, so the line should be computer = "laptop". The list is missing its closing square bracket. It should be apps = ["word", "game", "web"].
