Classifying software as system or application
Ask who the program serves: the computer itself (OS, antivirus, backup) is system software; a task the user wants done (word processor, game) is application software. Justify with 'because'.
Understanding Classifying software as system or application in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1
What it does: Antivirus and backup utilities maintain and protect the computer rather than do a user task, so they count as system software. Cost does not decide the type. The core test is who or what the program serves. Exam answers should use 'because' to give a reason. Naming the type alone does not show your reasoning.
Common mistakes: Antivirus software looks after the computer itself, so it is system software, not application software. The line should be kind = "system". A word processor does a task the user wants done (writing a letter), so it is application software. The line should be kind = "application".
