Advantage: accuracy and consistency

An automated system repeats a task in exactly the same way every time, with no tiredness or human error, so its results are more accurate and consistent than human work.

Understanding Advantage: accuracy and consistency in IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1

What it does: The loop runs the same instruction on every item, so all 500 products come out identical. The sensor reading is compared with an exact stored number, so the temperature is controlled precisely. Consistency means the same method and the same result every time. An automated system follows the same stored instructions on every run. Machines do not get tired or lose concentration, so they avoid errors caused by tiredness. Sensors take precise measurements all the time and the microprocessor reacts straight away, so the temperature stays close to 22 degrees. A program does not forget, get distracted or make slips, so there is less human error.

Common mistakes: The variable name is misspelled. The later lines use target, so the system would never hold the temperature at exactly 22. It should be target ← 22. An automated production line must repeat the same task over and over, so it needs a WHILE loop. IF runs once and does not match ENDWHILE. It should be WHILE line_running = TRUE.

Quick Questions

1. Why can an automated system produce more consistent results than a person?
A. It changes the way it does the task each time
B. It repeats the task in exactly the same way every time ✓
Consistency means the same method and the same result every time. An automated system follows the same stored instructions on every run.
2. A worker on a production line gets tired after 8 hours. What happens in an automated system?
A. It does not get tired, so its accuracy stays the same ✓
B. It gets tired too, so its accuracy drops each hour
Machines do not get tired or lose concentration, so they avoid errors caused by tiredness.
3. A production line is fully automated. What is the likely result for the products?
A. The products are identical to each other ✓
B. Each product is slightly different from the last
Because each product is made in exactly the same way, an automated production line makes identical products.
4. A greenhouse must stay at exactly 22 degrees. Which system keeps the temperature more accurate?
A. A person who checks a thermometer now and then
B. A temperature sensor and microprocessor that check the reading constantly ✓
Sensors take precise measurements all the time and the microprocessor reacts straight away, so the temperature stays close to 22 degrees.
5. Which statement about human error is correct?
A. Automation reduces human error because the computer follows its program exactly ✓
B. Automation increases human error because machines forget the instructions
A program does not forget, get distracted or make slips, so there is less human error.

Match the Pairs

IF temp < 22 THEN heater ON → The microprocessor compares the sensor reading with the stored value 22 and switches the heater on in exactly the same way every time.
WHILE running = TRUE → The system repeats its task again and again without getting tired, so the 1000th result is as good as the first.
Identical products on a production line: a robot follows the same steps for every item → FOR item ← 1 TO 500 weld(item)
Sensors give precise measurements, so an exact target such as 22 degrees can be kept → IF reading > 22 THEN coolerON
target ← 'about 22' → The target is vague text, not an exact number, so the sensor reading cannot be compared precisely.
weld(item, RANDOM(1, 5)) → A random setting makes each product different, which removes the consistency of automation.

Key Term

consistency
An automated system repeats a task in exactly the same way every time, with no tiredness or human error, so its results are more accurate and consistent than human work.

Fill in the Blanks

1. IF temperature < 22 THEN heater ← ON ENDIF
Hint: Type the comparison operator that checks whether the temperature is below the target.
2. IF temperature > 22 THEN heater ← OFF ENDIF
Hint: Type the state that stops the heater when the room is too warm.
3. WHILE running = TRUE CHECKTEMP() ENDWHILE
Hint: Type the keyword that makes the system repeat the same task again and again without tiring.
4. FOR item ← 1 TO 100 CUT(50) NEXT item
Hint: Type the keyword that sets the end point of the loop so every item on the production line gets the same treatment.
5. target ← 22 reading ← SENSOR() IF reading <> target THEN ADJUST()
Hint: Type the variable name that holds the exact value the system is trying to keep, so the reading is compared with it.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A targt ← 22
B temp ← READ_SENSOR()
C IF temp < target THEN
D heater ON
E ENDIF
Line A — The variable name is misspelled. The later lines use target, so the system would never hold the temperature at exactly 22. It should be target ← 22.
Question 2
A IF line_running = TRUE
B bottle ← FILL(500)
C CHECK(bottle)
D ENDWHILE
Line A — An automated production line must repeat the same task over and over, so it needs a WHILE loop. IF runs once and does not match ENDWHILE. It should be WHILE line_running = TRUE.
Question 3
A parts ← 0
B REPEAT
C CUT_PART(50)
D parts + 1 ← parts
E UNTIL parts = 100
Line D — Assignment goes the wrong way. The new value must be stored in the variable on the left, so the line should be parts ← parts + 1. Then all 100 parts are cut identically.
Question 4
A WHILE TRUE
B temp ← READ_SENSOR()
C IF temp > 22 THEN
D cooler OFF
E ENDIF
F ENDWHILE
Line D — If the temperature is above 22 the cooler must be switched ON to bring it back to 22. Switching it OFF would make the room even hotter. It should be cooler ON.
Question 5
A target = 22
B reading = sensor.read(
C diff = abs(reading - target)
D print(diff)
Line B — The closing bracket is missing, so the function call is not complete and gives a syntax error. It should be reading = sensor.read().
