Understanding Types of data: images, sound and video in Years 5–6 Data & Information
What it does: The .mp4 file type is used for video, which is saved as a file just like pictures and sounds. The .png ending tells us this file is a picture. The file type shows what kind of data is inside. An .mp3 file stores audio. A .jpg file stores a picture. An .mp4 file stores video. A .txt file stores plain text. A .png file stores an image. A .wav file stores sound. A named chunk of stored data. Pictures, sounds and videos are all data that a digital system saves as files, such as photo.jpg, song.mp3 or clip.mp4.
Common mistakes: A picture file should end in .jpg or .png. The .mp3 ending is for audio files, so it should be "beach.jpg". A video file should end in .mp4. The .mp3 ending is for audio, so the line should be video_file = "play.mp4".
