Data science roles: scientist, engineer and analyst
Data engineers prepare data, data analysts explore it and share results, and data scientists build models and insights. Together they share the data science life cycle.
Understanding Data science roles: scientist, engineer and analyst in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 9–10
What it does: Data analysts explore data, spot patterns and share the results with charts and reports. Acquiring and cleaning data is the engineer's part of the shared life cycle. Communicating results to an audience is a key part of the analyst's job. Data scientists build models and insights from data that has been prepared.
Common mistakes: Building models is the data scientist's job. A data engineer prepares data, so line 1 should be engineer = "prepares data". A data scientist builds models and insights. Cleaning and preparing raw data is mainly the data engineer's task, so line 2 should be task = "build a model".
