A chart title linked to a cell

A chart title linked to a cell. Click the title, type = then a cell or text joined with &, and the title updates when the cell changes, such as a drop-down choice.

Understanding A chart title linked to a cell in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 9–10

What it does: The text in quotes stays the same, and & adds the current value of B1 so the title updates when the choice changes. After clicking the title and typing = followed by the cell, the title is linked and follows that cell. Without the = at the start, the text is just typed words, so it will not link to any cell. The & is the join (concatenate) operator. It sticks text and values together, so you get Sales for Maths, for example. Select the title first, then type = and click or name the cell it should show. Text in a formula must be wrapped in quotes before it is joined to a cell with &.

Common mistakes: Without the = sign, the chart title shows the plain text D1 and is not linked to the cell. It should be: Type =D1 and press Enter. Text and a cell are joined with the & operator, not +. Using + gives a #VALUE! error. It should be: Type ="Marks for "&B1.

Quick Questions

1. How do you link a chart title to a cell?
A. Click the title, type = then click the cell ✓
B. Double-click the title and type the cell name as plain text
Starting with = tells the spreadsheet the title is a link, so it shows whatever is in that cell and updates when the cell changes.
2. Which title formula joins text with the value in B1?
A. ="Sales for "&B1 ✓
B. ="Sales for "+B1 as plain text
The & symbol joins text and a cell value together. Typing the text without an = just gives a fixed title.
3. A chart title is linked to cell B1, and B1 changes from Maths to Science. What happens to the title?
A. It stays showing Maths until you retype it
B. It updates to show Science ✓
A linked title follows its cell, so it updates automatically whenever the cell changes.
4. Why would you link a chart title to a drop-down list cell?
A. So the title matches the option the user picks ✓
B. So the drop-down list can be deleted
When the chart is driven by a drop-down choice, a linked title always names the data currently shown.
5. Which one will NOT make a linked title?
A. Typing =Sheet1!B1 in the title bar
B. Typing Sales for B1 in the title box ✓
Without the = at the start, the text is just typed words, so it will not link to any cell.

Match the Pairs

="Sales for "&B1 → Joins the words Sales for with whatever is in cell B1, so a linked chart title can change when B1 changes
=Sheet1!$B$1 → Links the chart title straight to cell B1, so the title shows exactly what that cell says
To join fixed text and a drop-down choice in cell B1 into one title, use the & operator → ="Results for "&B1
To link a title to a cell, click the chart title, then type = and the cell address in the formula bar → =Sheet1!B1
=Sales for &B1 → The fixed text is missing quotation marks, so the formula is invalid. It should be ="Sales for "&B1
="Sales for "+B1 → The + sign is used instead of & to join text, so it gives an error. It should be ="Sales for "&B1
