What cyber security is

The protection of digital systems, accounts and data from attack, damage and unauthorised access, such as keeping accounts, files and devices safe.

Understanding What cyber security is in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 7–8

What it does: A strong passphrase and multi-factor authentication stop unauthorised access to an account, which is cyber security for accounts. Encryption scrambles data so it is useless to anyone without the key. Leaving files open lets anyone read them. Updates fix weaknesses and antivirus finds malware, so both keep a device safe. Ignoring updates leaves weaknesses open for attackers. Anyone with an email account, phone or online game account has data and accounts worth protecting. Cyber security keeps systems safe while still letting the right people use them. It does not mean avoiding the internet.

Common mistakes: An if statement must end with a colon. The line should be: if mfa_on and password_strong: so the account protection check runs. To protect data from being read, you encrypt it. decrypt turns scrambled data back into readable data, so the line should use encrypt.

Quick Questions

1. Which best describes cyber security?
A. Protecting digital systems, accounts and data from attack and unauthorised access ✓
B. Making a computer run as fast as possible
Cyber security is about keeping systems, accounts and data safe from attack, damage and unauthorised access. Speed is a different goal.
2. Which is an example of protecting an account?
A. Sharing your password with a friend so they can log in
B. Turning on multi-factor authentication for your login ✓
Multi-factor authentication adds an extra check so a stolen password alone cannot open the account. Sharing passwords makes an account less safe.
3. Which is an example of protecting data?
A. Encrypting a file so only people with the key can read it ✓
B. Saving every file on a shared computer with no password
Encryption scrambles data so it is useless to anyone without the key. Leaving files open lets anyone read them.
4. Which is an example of protecting a device?
A. Ignoring update messages for months
B. Installing updates and antivirus software on your laptop ✓
Updates fix weaknesses and antivirus finds malware, so both keep a device safe. Ignoring updates leaves weaknesses open for attackers.
5. True or false: Cyber security only matters to big companies and governments.
A. False - it matters to everyone who uses accounts, data or devices ✓
B. True - students and families do not need it
Anyone with an email account, phone or online game account has data and accounts worth protecting.

Match the Pairs

cyber security → The protection of digital systems, accounts and data from attack, damage and unauthorised access.
protect(device) → Keeping a phone or laptop safe from attack, for example with antivirus software and updates.
Protecting an account means making it hard for anyone else to log in as you. → account.protect = strongPassphrase + MFA
Protecting data means keeping files safe from theft or damage, and unreadable to outsiders. → data = encrypt(data)
cyber security = only antivirus on a laptop → This is too narrow. Cyber security protects accounts, data and devices, not just one device with one tool.
cyber security = deleting all your files → Cyber security is about keeping data safe from attack, damage and unauthorised access, not removing it.

Key Term

cyber security
The protection of digital systems, accounts and data from attack, damage and unauthorised access, such as keeping accounts, files and devices safe.

Fill in the Blanks

1. protect(accounts, data, devices)
Hint: Type the action word for what cyber security does to keep digital things safe from attack.
2. protect(accounts, data, devices)
Hint: Type the word for the logins and profiles, such as email or gaming, that cyber security keeps safe.
3. protect(accounts, data, devices)
Hint: Type the word for the files and personal information that need protecting from theft or damage.
4. protect(accounts, data, devices)
Hint: Type the word for the phones, laptops and tablets that need protecting from attack.
5. IF user IS NOT allowed THEN deny(access)
Hint: Type the function name for refusing entry, which stops unauthorised access.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A mfa_on = True
B password_strong = True
C if mfa_on and password_strong
D print('Account safe')
Line C — An if statement must end with a colon. The line should be: if mfa_on and password_strong: so the account protection check runs.
Question 2
A data = 'maths report'
B key = 'K7'
C secret = decrypt(data, key)
D print(secret)
Line C — To protect data from being read, you encrypt it. decrypt turns scrambled data back into readable data, so the line should use encrypt.
Question 3
A antivirus = True
B updates = true
C if antivirus and updates:
D print('Device is safer')
Line B — Python's Boolean value must be written with a capital T. The line should be: updates = True
Question 4
A def check_device(av, fw):
B if av and fw:
C return 'Protected'
D return At risk
Line D — The text being returned must be inside quotes. The line should be: return 'At risk' so it is a string, not two unknown names.
Question 5
A function lock_account(user):
B user.locked = True
C return user
Line A — Python uses the keyword def to define a function, not function. The line should be: def lock_account(user):
