Password manager

An app that stores and fills in all your passwords for you, locked behind one strong master passphrase. It can make random passwords and autofill them only on the right site.

Understanding Password manager in ACARA Digital Technologies Years 7–8

What it does: Autofill checks the website address, so it stays quiet on a fake site and warns you that something is wrong. A password manager lets you remember just one strong passphrase while it stores all the other passwords for you. A long passphrase of random words is hard to guess but easier to remember. password123 is a very weak and common choice. Never share your master passphrase. Anyone who has it can get into all of your accounts.

Common mistakes: The vault must be locked with the strong master passphrase, not a weak PIN like "1234". It should be vault ← lock(logins, master). A random password needs to be long to be strong. A length of 3 is far too short and is easy to crack. It should be something like length ← 16.

Quick Questions

1. What protects the passwords stored inside a password manager?
A. One strong master passphrase ✓
B. A short password shared with friends
The manager is locked behind one strong master passphrase. Only you should know it, so make it long and unique.
2. Which is a good job for a password manager?
A. Reusing your favourite password on every site
B. Making a random password for each new account ✓
A password manager can generate long random passwords so every account gets a different one. Reusing a password is risky.
3. You use a password manager. How many passwords do you need to remember?
A. Every password for every account
B. Just the master passphrase ✓
The manager remembers and fills in the other passwords for you. You only need to remember the master passphrase.
4. You open a fake bank website made to look real. What should a password manager do?
A. Not autofill, because the site address does not match ✓
B. Autofill anyway because the page looks the same
Autofill checks the real site address. If it does not match, nothing is filled in. This can warn you about a fake site.
5. Which master passphrase is the better choice?
A. purple-kettle-river-jumps-seven ✓
B. password123
A long passphrase of random words is hard to guess but easier to remember. password123 is a very weak and common choice.

Match the Pairs

master passphrase → The one long, strong passphrase that unlocks your password manager and protects every password stored inside it
generate password → A password manager feature that creates a long, random password so you do not have to invent or remember one
A password manager only fills in your login on the real website it saved, which helps you avoid fake phishing sites → autofill on the right site
One strong master passphrase protects a whole vault of passwords, so you only need to remember one → 1 master passphrase = many passwords
Master passphrase: abc123 → The master passphrase is short and easy to guess. It should be a long, strong passphrase, because it protects every password in the vault.
Share my master passphrase with my friend so they can log in for me → The master passphrase must be kept secret and never shared with anyone, because it unlocks every account in the vault.

Spot the Error

Question 1
A master ← "pink tiger jumps"
B vault ← lock(logins, "1234")
C save(vault)
Line B — The vault must be locked with the strong master passphrase, not a weak PIN like "1234". It should be vault ← lock(logins, master).
Question 2
A length ← 3
B pass ← random(length)
C save(site, pass)
Line A — A random password needs to be long to be strong. A length of 3 is far too short and is easy to crack. It should be something like length ← 16.
Question 3
A saved ← "bank.com.au"
B site ← currentSite()
C IF site = saved THEN
D autofill(master)
E ENDIF
Line D — Autofill should fill in the saved login for that site. It must never type your master passphrase into a website. It should be autofill(login).
Question 4
A length ← 16
B chars ← letters + numbers
C pass ← random(chars, length)
D share(friend, pass)
Line D — A password manager saves the new password in your vault so you do not have to share it or remember it. Sharing it with a friend is unsafe. It should be save(site, pass).
Question 5
A words ← 4
B master ← randomWords(1)
C remember(master)
Line B — A master passphrase should be several random words long. Using only 1 word makes it weak. It should use the words variable: randomWords(words).
